Why does US Soccer continue to make things difficult?

US Soccer released an article, Path Forward on Player Registration. It basically says “we asked a bunch of people, got mixed results, and will give you multiple options now.” The article is overwritten and confusing to say the least. Maybe it’s just me?

They said they conducted a survey with over 15.000 responses from leagues, members, families, players, and coaches.

US Soccer used to be based on school year age groups (August 1-July 31) and then a few years ago changed it to birth year (like most of the rest of the world).

Well, they released their findings and yup, they continue to muddy up the youth soccer landscape.

Beginning in Fall 2026

Members will have greater flexibility to select the most suitable registration option for their participants. This enables member organizations to make their own decisions regarding registration options for the leagues and competitions they sanction or operate.

3 Different Age Group Options

Member organizations will be responsible for determining the age group formation cycle for their leagues and competitions. The main options include: (1) Birth Year – January 1 to December 31, (2) Seasonal Year – August 1 to July 31, or (3) Seasonal Year – September 1 to August 31.

Localized Decision Making

Player registration should align with the specific needs and characteristics of the local community, such as school year schedules and other regional considerations.
