A World Cup in the Middle East for the first time in history is intriguing. For starters, the United States is roughly 849x the size of host nation Qatar. The state of Connecticut is 8.3% larger! How can a country the size of Qatar handle the world’s largest sporting event in such small quarters?

Get to Know Lusail Stadium – 10 Fun Facts

  1. Construction began in 2017 & the 80,000 seat stadium will be the site of the World Cup Final on December 18th along with nine other matches throughout the competition.
  2. The newly built stadium shell resembles the rich history of complex and decorative motifs on bowls, vessels and art pieces found during the rise of civilization in the Islam and Arab world.
  3. The stadium cost roughly $715 million.
  4. The stadium is the centerpiece in the newly built City of Lusail which is roughly 10 miles north of Doha.
  5. Surrounded by a moat and uses six bridges for entrance.
  6. The stadium will leave no carbon footprint with its cooling system.
  7. One of the ten biggest stadiums in the world.
  8. The roof is made up of a state of the art material that lets just enough sunlight in to allow grass growth, protection against warm winds and dust.
  9. After the World Cup, the stadium will be turned into community space such as retail shops, schools, health clinics, restaurants and sports facilities.
  10. Most of the 80,000 seats inside the stadium will be removed and donated after the tournament concludes.
